Joe v. The Future

Spring gardening is all about the future. You plant tiny little seeds in the hopes that they grow into a bountiful harvest months later. That’s the optimistic view at least.

Despite some pretty wet weather we’ve been making our preparations for the last couple of weeks. This year, I have decided to build raised beds in our old parking space in order to make room for more vegetables. It was a muddy struggle to build the first one in the rain last weekend, but I’m pretty happy with my handiwork such as it is.

The optimist in me can’t wait for all those wonderful tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas, etc. The pessimist in me knows that it is just a matter of time before my beautiful garden is beset by pests. I will soon be battling slugs, aphids, and various other tiny enemies, not to mention the birds, raccoons, and my nemesis the squirrel as they all feast on my hard work.

Any suggestions on how to head them off at the pass are much appreciated.

The war will be long, but the victory will be sweet.

Welcome to my blog about pest control. Its hard to know where to start. I have been living in a house for about two years now. Before that I lived in apartments and, although i had some encounters with urban wildlife back then, I did not understand the true nature of our relationship with nature. Today I understand. Two long years of struggle against the armies of ants, aphids, slugs, other bugs, not to mention mice, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and drunks has taught me a lot. I decided it was time I shared those lessons with the world. I don’t delude myself into thinking I have won the war – every battle won is but a fleeting moment before a new front is opened – but, if my experiences can help others, then it is my pleasure to serve the greater good.
